I dont need to be the size 4 I aspired to be

Last year  I hit an ultimate low with my body confidence. It got to the point I would wake up and before even looking in the mirror I would put a layer of foundation on then apply my mask of makeup on. Not bearing to look in the mirror.

This past week I’ve felt confidence in my faith. I dont need to be the size 4 I aspired to be or have the full on airbrushed look. This is my third day of no make-up and I’m feeling great. As well as eating.

Thanks Stephanie + team x x x

beauty that lies behind every girl

“Bringing attention to the natural has opened my eyes to the beauty that lies behind every girl. It has made me realise that it’s not about how close we can get our image to perfection, but that we are already made perfectin our own seperate ways.”

seeing women of all sizes embracing their figures

Being apart of the one size does not fit all project was an amazing experience, being able to see the unrealistic size that you have to be to model and yet seeing women of all sizes embracing their figures, regardless of whether they fitted the mould or not.

happy in my own skin

I used to let other girls opinions of me mould me and determine who I was. But this week the seminars have taught me that I should be happy in my own skin because I was fearfully + wonderfully made. I am a lot happy now + I have changed a lot

I had so much fun ‘not fitting’

Steph’s shoots have gained a reputation for being fun, exciting and interesting for the model and all others on team, she succeeds in capturing difficult issues to address, or problems that many want to keep quiet or are wary to raise awareness of. Although I did not fit within the ‘ideal’ measurements, I had so much fun ‘not fitting’ that practically, I found myself supporting the title and loving the statement rather than being dejected by it as the media would have us be.

I am beautiful because this is the way I have been made

Attending the workshop allowed me to know that despite not having the ideal body measurements of the media I still know I am beautiful because this is the way I have been made. It made me realise and understand that I do not need to show large amounts of my body, nor do I have to desire to be smaller or bigger in certain parts of my body. It made me love who I am, every extra inch, every extra pound. I now love me for me, not what someone who has never met me wants me to be.

loving who I am

I first came to the focus groups with a face covered with foundation, false eyelashes, eye liner and left the experience accepting and loving who I am, without having to hide behind the makeup.

comfortable within one’s skin

One of the project’s strengths was its personal touch. Rather than simply tell every woman she was beautiful, the organisers spent a considerable amount of time with each participant. The team helped each individual to grow in confidence & freedom; to become comfortable within one’s skin.

Rarity equals value

Freedom & well-being come when individuals internally recognise their value & self worth and when they accept that who they are, is indeed, significantly different from everybody else, but therein lies the beauty of it. Rarity equals value.

she made everyone feel special and important to the shoot

Steph had a vision for all of our ‘looks’ which were all very different and yet she made everyone feel special and important to the shoot. The experience definitely had a positive impact on me and as a model, I represented the issues of anorexia and wearing excessive amounts of foundation, which helped me to understand the harmfulness behind both, plus, I was able to acknowledge how true it was that such issues effect all girls in some way – myself being one of them. Soon after I made a conscious decision to not wear any foundation anymore and my skin has got so much healthier and clearer without it as opposed to with it!

Learned so much about the media

I had a fantastic day. Learned so much about the media. Helped me appreciate my shape more.

It challenged thinking

The Natural Beauty project looked at addressing the effects current views on body image have on women.
As a psychology graduate, I am particularly interested in how the perception of one’s self affects an well-being. The project highlighted important issues concerning the impact of the media in particular, on the way women & girls view themselves.

It encouraged participants to discover & celebrate the qualities that make them unique & provided a safe environment within which they could come out from behind the veils of the ‘societal dictation’ of what beauty is. It challenged thinking and exposed the extent to which many (myself included) have ‘bought’ into certain ideas of what constitutes beauty.

thanks for everything

My dare was to not wear mascara for a week… I have just successfully completed this, it was hard but rewarding, I never thought I would be able to complete this, thanks for everything Stephanie :-)

This project definitely raised my awareness

This project definitely raised my awareness of how influential and damaging to our self confidence magazines can be. By showing us in a no-way-condemning manner, how we were being effected by the media, it was much easier to accept and I was grateful to be educated about how the media works and how for marketing purposes, women are fed the lies that they need to wear this, use this make up and do their hair like this in order to be considered beautiful or to look as stunning as some celebrity.

I felt empowered

Stephanie was never too late reminding me of my own self-worth – even in the small things, thanking me so sincerely for taking part in her projects. She took an interest in my thoughts and opinions as no interaction with a film, magazine or music scene ever has or could. She saw me as an equal, an individual with my own right to express. In my opinion, expression is suppressed in today’s society but with Stephanie, I felt empowered. I am yet more certain that I was not the only one to finish the projects with this sense of confidence. I only regret that my own girl friends weren’t available to take part, too…and their sisters (and even for some of them, their mothers too!)

comfortable being myself

Stephanie’s projects helped me realise that it’s better to be comfortable being myself than uncomfortable trying to be someone else.

each person is unique

The projects have inspired me to be thankful for who I’ve been created to be, and the way I look, each person is unique and it is a blessing that every woman would have something significantly different about themselves.

It was a great photo shoot experience

The models were showing a different side of beauty, a rare one that often is not considered beautiful. The learning of the preparation before a shoot taught me a lot about the art of a shoot. I also got to participate and help out during both the make up stage and the photo shoot. It was a great photo shoot experience and a step on the ladder to launching my own photography career. Inspiration in its rawest form.

I’d like to thank Stephanie

I’d like to thank Stephanie for allowing me to continue to be a part in the Stephanie heart movement. The campaign highlighter the flaws in female targeting magazines and showed the average height and width of a model. These measurements were then put up against the everyday women found on the high street and those invited to help out.

finding inner beauty

The message to this photo shoot was for young women to find inner beauty. They were tasked to dress in bin liners and rubbish bags but yet look good. Sound hard? They made it look easy. For this task i was one of 5 photographers given a small group of 7 or 8 to work with going out into the community and taking the best shots possible.

Revolutions begin with revolutionaries.

In the western world our women and girls are under the constant barrage of the media. Tv, film, faked photos of models constantly telling them how they should look, how the should act and who they should be, to be accepted. It is then no surprise when eating disorders are prevalent with over 1.1 million people diagnosed per year and a further amount go undiagnosed. We have created a culture where being you is not acceptable and we portray what is acceptable and a vision of beauty that is unobtainable, when the reality is that the model is under weight, unhealthy and drastically photo-shopped. But, young and impressionable women are not told this and this does not stop the subconscious absorption of the message that is loud and clear. This is whats hot. The average model is a size zero. The average women is a size 16. Syntax error.

Revolutions begin with revolutionaries. I have been lucky enough to see this revolutionary at work and have been truly blessed by the work Stephanie has done and i am male! The confidence restored by Stephanie’s campaigns is priceless. While should people be bullied by the media and why should our children pay for the perverted visions of the media? We have never need Stephanie Heart more!
